Community Exhibit Features Work of Three Nonprofits
St. Petersburg, FL (Aug. 18, 2010) - Works of art by campers enrolled in The Pier Aquarium's Summer Marine Adventures (SMA) camps are showcased at the Florida International Museum at St. Petersburg College through Aug. 28, 2010.
The exhibit, called Summer of Art, is a collaboration of four organizations with three exhibits under one roof created by the summer campers, children participating in the Florida Holocaust Museum's (FHM) SPEAK UP SPEAK NOW! Community Outreach Project and Creative Clay's ARTLINK 2010. The community exhibit is fun, moving and hopes to open up minds to three different and important voices in the community. Topics addressed included the importance of water in our daily lives, tolerance, diversity and the creativity in all of us.
Three of the 11 aquarium camps, Let's Get Fresh, Go with the Flow and Worlds of Water emphasized the Tampa Bay watershed and water art. The show features projects from other camps as well. Much of the art work on display conveys the young campers' wonder of the ocean and other water habitats, their love of aquatic animals and their thoughts and dismay over the Gulf oil and its effect on the environment.
A joint art opening reception for The Pier Aquarium and the Florida Holocaust Museum was held Aug. 6 for the artist campers, their families, aquarium members, SMA sponsors, SPEAK UP SPEAK NOW artists, their families, FHM members and other guests.
The Florida International Museum's Summer of Art exhibition in the Florida International Museum gallery at St. Petersburg College’s Downtown Center is open through Aug. 28. Hours are 10am-4pm Tuesday-Saturday. Admission is free.
The Pier Aquarium's 2010 Summer Marine Adventures camps were sponsored by: the Community Foundation of Greater St. Petersburg, Family Center on Deafness, Inc., Pinellas Comunity Foundation, Pinellas County Cultural Affairs, Publix Super Market Charities, SnookZ Graphics, Southwest Florida Water Management District, St. Petersburg Times Fund, Inc. and Tampa Bay Estuary Program.
