2006 Kids' Fishing Tournament was a blast (as always)!

More than 400 kids and adults (parents and grandparents) came to The Pier Aquarium's 18th annual Kids' Fishing Tournament Saturday, May 13 for a morning of fishing.

Rick Weil the Balloon Man and Heather the face painter provided some of the early morning entertainment and Mr. Snook greeted the kids and handed out coloring books.  Emcee for the event was Executive Director E. "Mr. Howard" Rutherford.

The Pier Aquarium's own "Jamie and the Fish Heads" (from left, Jamie Lee Curtis, Natalie Vida, Emily Stehle, behind not seen Misty Carr aka Mr. Snook, and Kate Page) presented Fishy Business (a combination of marine education and entertainment about the fish that live in Tampa Bay) and led the kids in singing songs and reading and telling their own fish jokes. There was plenty of time afterward for the kids to handle specimens (with gloves!) and see them up close through a microscope.

Funding for Fishy Business was provided by employees of the St. Petersburg Times through the newspaper's Employee Giving Program, a match from the St. Petersburg Times Fund, Inc. and matching funds from the Pinellas County Arts Council.

Eckerd College Search and Rescue demonstrated how they perform rescues out in the bay. Door prizes were handed out by Karen Henschen, education coordinator, and, of course, trophies and ribbons were awarded by Board Director Don Sweat and Curator of Exhibits Kevin Kowzan to the winners of the fishing tournament in 11 different categories.

Thank you to all the sponsors and volunteers who helped make this Fishing Tournament memorable! Volunteers came from the YMCA, Eckerd College Search and Rescue, Campbell Park Elementary Marine Science Program, University of South Florida College of Marine Science, the Pier Aquarium and its board of directors. Our sponsors were: the St. Petersburg Times, Cha Cha Coconuts, Coca-Cola, Publix Super Market Charities, The Pier Baithouse, Aylesworth Fish and Bait, Elinor Gollay, the Everett Family and Sun Watchers.
