Habitat Encounters

Students explore wetland habitats inside The Pier Aquarium and shuffle through a sea grass habitat at Spa Beach.

Activities:

Wacky Wetlands – one hour

Students learn about the different types of wetlands found in Florida, investigate how wetland animals adapt to environmental conditions, explore how mangrove trees filter storm water run-off, protect shorelines and act as nurseries for many marine animals. They will play a game of “Hydropoly” that demonstrates how land use affects wetlands.

This covers: language arts (reading, listening, viewing and speaking), math (number sense, concepts and operations), science (the nature of matter, processes of life, how living things interact with their environment, the nature of science).

Shuffling through Sea Grass – one hour

Students explore the mysteries of the sea grass beds of Tampa Bay, learn the importance of this fragile environment and investigate marine animals that rely on sea grass for protection and food.

This covers: language arts (reading, listening, viewing and speaking), math (number sense, concepts and operations), science (the nature of matter, energy, force and motion, processes that shape the earth, processes of life, how living things interact with their environment, the nature of science), social studies (geography), health education (responsible health behavior, advocate and promote health living) and physical education (literacy, responsible physical activity behaviors, advocate and promote physically active lifestyles).
